As optical access network is developing more and more, commercial and residential will be have more needs of this network deployment. Now most of these environments have deploy copper wire access network, buy Optical Access networks will replace the copper wire access networks gradually.
How to deploy optical access network in the commercial and residential?
In this article, I will share you the solution.
PON access solution to build an all-optical network that features flexible access, high quality of experience, and efficient OAM. The solution covers the following scenarios on the enterprise campus: enterprise office and production, residential community, video surveillance, video conferencing, wireless coverage, bulletins, and access control systems.
Campus access network scenarios can be divided into office network, public facility network, and home network. Office networks use FTTO-type ONUs to carry voice, broadband Internet access, video conferencing, and private line services. Public facility networks use indoor and outdoor ONUs to provide access control, surveillance, and Wi-Fi services. Typical home networks are those that use ONTs to carry triple play services.
This is an image of campus access network.
This solution has these highlights:
- Flexible network
Multiple services carried over one PON network, network decoupled from services; service quality ensured through traffic classification and HQoS.
Flexible capacity expansion; heterogenous network that supports PON, 10G PON, and 40G PON on the same platform.
- Ubiquitous access
Unified multi-service access, including broadband, wireless, and telephony services, broadcast television, video surveillance, and distant meeting.
Unified multi-scenario access, meeting indoor and outdoor network requirements through a rich series of OLTs, ODN devices, and ONUs.
- Green and economical
P2MP passive networks drastically save optical fibers and support a 20 km distance.
New copper line technologies such as vectoring and G.fast deliver a bandwidth over 300 Mbit/s, and drive down cable investment by reusing the copper line resources.
Now we know the solution of Optical Access Network for Commercial and residential, but what products can be used here?

Building an Oilfield Benchmark Campus with GPON
Customer Profile
The customer existing infrastructure networks: telephone switch network, broadband metro network, wireless communications network, and fiber transport network. To further strengthen overall service abilities and competitiveness, customer puts forth the “broadband acceleration through full GPON” strategy, and is advancing towards a broadband, intelligent, and comprehensive large – scale enterprise.
Challenges to the Customer
The switch and DSLAM networks of customer have been running over a decade. Owing to the long service time, safety risks exist and some components of the devices are having supply difficulties.
The DSLAM system is falling short of the broadband service development demands.
The new access network provisions more services, and must be a future-proof broadband network, and must be able to reduce OPEX and increase access bandwidth in the long term, meeting service requirements in the next 5-10 years.
The new access network must be a secure, stable, and reliable network that is aligned with the informatization of and the oilfield.
The network structure must be as simplified as possible, and the network must be as easy to deploy and maintain as possible.
Solution
Based on the requirements of the customer oilfield enterprise and residential community, provides two PON access solution for the customer: FTTB and FTTH.
For reconstruction of old residential communities, the actual installation rate is high, and FTTB allows users to share the same ONU, so the account-opening cost per line is lower than that of FTTH. In addition, abundant copper line resources have been deployed in the buildings. Therefore, meeting bandwidth requirements, FTTB at the same time has more advantages regarding costs and deployment. By comparing the combinations of technology + costs, the customer chooses FTTB.
For new residential communities, the actual installation rate is low, and copper line resources are not deployed. Considering the costs and the future technology trend, recommends FTTH to the customer.
Benefits for Customer
- Devices on the live network are centrally managed through the powerful NMS platform, significantly simplifying system OAM and driving down TCO.
- Devices, services, and lines are deployed using 1+1 redundancy, greatly improving network reliability.
- Many modules are pre-connected for deployment, thereby reducing operation difficulty, especially when there is heavy workload for service provisioning.
- FTTB/FTTH hybrid network allows for flexible bandwidth configuration. Services are provisioned and deployed in a unified manner over the entire network.
- Balance is well achieved between technology and business, producing the most cost-effective solution for the customer.
