The Cisco Catalyst 4500 Supervisor 8-E and 8L-E, combined with a Cisco 4500 E-Series chassis, help you meet these requirements. The modular switches can grow as your business grows; you just add line cards to the chassis. The engines are powerful. They have been third-party tested to deliver line-rate performance depending on packet size.
Total system capacity is 384 Gigabit Ethernet POE/POE+/UPOE access ports or 96 10-Gigabit Ethernet line-card ports. There are eight additional 10-Gigabit Ethernet uplink ports on Supervisor 8-E and four additional uplink ports on Supervisor 8L-E.
Unified Wired and Wireless Functions in the 8-E
The Cisco Catalyst 4500E Supervisor Engine 8-E enterprise-class switching engine delivers full convergence between wired and wireless networks on a single platform. This convergence is enabled by the Cisco Unified Access Data Plane (UADP) application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC). You can set and enforce uniform wired and wireless policies across both network environments. The engine also supports enhanced network services such as application visibility and control.
The Supervisor 8-E provides up to 928 Gbps of wired access per system and up to 20 Gbps of wireless termination. The Supervisor 8L-E offers up to 560 Gbps of wired access per system. Both Supervisor Engine 8-E and 8L-E support 48 Gbps per slot with Flexible NetFlow (FNF), integrated Wireshark, and advanced security features such as MACSec and TrustSec.
The 8L-E Supervisor Engine is a low-scale version of the 8-E. It supports the same features and speeds as the 8-E with the exception of unified wired-wireless convergence.
Keeps on Switching
The 8-E and 8L-E Supervisor Engines provide a highly available access switching platform. In a redundant Catalyst 4500E chassis with two Supervisor Engines, the standby supervisor seamlessly takes over if the active supervisor reloads. The same redundancy is built in for fans and power supplies. In a single chassis with dual supervisors, four uplinks are active on each Supervisor 8-E (or two uplinks on Supervisor 8L-E), providing uplink redundancy when these ports are deployed as 10-Gigabit Ethernet uplinks in an access deployment.
Redundancy in the access and distribution network segments is particularly attractive to enterprises with mission-critical communications, such as a hospital or other critical care facility, and financial institutions.
The Cisco Catalyst 4500E engines also support Cisco Virtual Switching System (VSS). Two switch chassis can be connected and managed as one larger, virtual switch. If components should fail on one physical switch, the second’s resources automatically take over the functions.
The engines are backward and forward compatible with most existing Cisco Catalyst 4500E line cards and power supplies. The platform is hardware-ready to support campus fabric technology for segmenting users into groups and applying policies to each group. With the Catalyst 4500E centralized architecture, customers get investment protection against future new technologies that place demanding needs on their networks.
