I would like to have some pointers – Can someone tell me how I can have configured the Cisco 871 Router for VOIP – incoming AND outgoing calls?
Most Voice over IP services and applications offer substantial savings over regular phone service because voice calls are made via the Internet instead of telephone lines. This makes the technology an attractive option for Internet users. If you use a Cisco 871 router on your network, you can configure the device to use VoIP. This is done by opening a port or a range of ports on the router so that the VoIP traffic can get through.
How to Configure VoIP on a Cisco 871 Router?
1. Click “Start,” then type “cmd” in the search bar at the bottom left corner of the screen.
2. Click “cmd” in the search results pop-up box to open the Command Prompt window.
3. Type the letters “ipconfig” at the command prompt, then press the “Enter” key to display your IP configuration information. The IP address of the Cisco router appears to the right of “Default Gateway.”
4. Record the IP address, then launch a Web browser and type the IP address in the address bar.
5. Press the “Enter” key, then enter the login information for the router in the pop-up window. Type “NONE” in the “Username” field and leave the “Password” field blank, then press the “OK” button.
6. Click “Advanced” on the left side of the window, then select “Virtual Servers.
7. Enter the port number or the range of port numbers required by your VoIP service in the “Port Range” boxes. If there is only one port number, enter the port number in both “Port Range” boxes.
8. Type a name in the “Description” box, then click the “Save” button.
Tips & Warnings
- You need your VoIP service or application’s required port number to configure the router. It is usually listed in the user manual, settings or help pages.
