Cisco Routers: Lower Costs and Carbon Use in Data Centre Networks

Unlock Best Pricing with In-stock, Ready-to-Ship Products

Cisco has upgraded its line of 800G routers, aiming to transform the economics and sustainability of the Internet for the Future. The upgrade is in response to the explosive growth of the Internet of Things (IoT), where the number of connected devices has grown from billions to trillions. This has seen demand for bandwidth increase not only from connecting devices with 5G and Wi-Fi but also from the artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML) workloads required to drive insights from connected devices.

The new 28.8Tbps/36 x 800G line card for Cisco 8000 Series Routers is powered by the Cisco Silicon One processor. This upgrade is said to be able to lower operational costs while protecting investments as networks evolve from 100G, 400G and 800G capacities. It can also lead to carbon savings by using less hardware to scale and equipment reuse.

The new line of routers is ideal for data centre environments that require more bandwidth over traditional workloads, as AI/ML fabrics need to scale with denser spines that are critical to support the massive number of processors with low latency. The Cisco 8000 Series Router System also creates up to 83% space savings, allowing users denser networks with much of the same infrastructure to support use cases such as 5G, broadband, IoT and AI/ML.

Chris Griffin, the chief network architect of Florida LambdaRail, said the Cisco 8000 Series Router System was the “obvious choice” for their new network, as it offered “unbelievable forwarding capacity, operational efficiency and the dependable IOS XR network operating system”. He noted that the combination of features offered by the router system not only provided them with a state-of-the-art network but also ensured there were enough cost savings to scale their network for years to come.

Cisco’s upgrade to its 800G routers is designed to meet the growing demand for bandwidth from the IoT, 5G and AI/ML workloads. The router system is said to be able to lower operational costs and protect investments, while also offering space and carbon savings. It is ideal for data centre environments that require more bandwidth for AI/ML fabrics, as well as for networks looking to scale with denser spines to support high numbers of processors with low latency. Florida LambdaRail is one such network that has already seen success with the router system, with the combination of features enabling them to have a state-of-the-art network with enough cost savings to scale their network for years to come.
