What is WiFi 6E?

Unlock Best Pricing with In-stock, Ready-to-Ship Products

On May 29th, 2020, Qualcomm announced the launch of the first batch of Wi-Fi 6E chips, suitable for routers and mobile phones. Among them, Wi-Fi 6E chips supporting mobile phones will eventually be concentrated on the Qualcomm Snapdragon series.

I believe many people will feel that the WiFi 6 that has been hot recently. Why is there another Wi-Fi 6E? Compared with WiFi 6, what are the improvements?

Here is a quick introduction video of WI-FI 6. Get to know it in 2 minutes.

Let ’s talk about Wi-Fi 6 first. What is WiFi 6? In fact, in 2017, Qualcomm Global launched the first Wi-Fi 6 network solution. By 2019, the flagship phones of Samsung and Apple have also been equipped with WiFi 6. There are also some other company produce Wi-Fi 6 devices, such as Huawei 5G CPE Pro WiFi 6 Router, Xiaomi Mi AX3600 WiFi 6 5G Router, and so on.

WiFi 6 is the sixth generation of wireless communication technology, also called 802.11ax, but the previous 802.11xx name is more complicated, and the IEEE Standards Association changed it to a simpler form that is easier to understand.

Old Name New Name
802.11b Wi-Fi 1
802.11a Wi-Fi 2
802.11g Wi-Fi 3
802.11n Wi-Fi 4
802.11ac Wi-Fi 5
802.11ax Wi-Fi 6

Compared with WiFi 5, WiFi 6 has some major advantages:

The first is speed. The theoretical maximum data throughput of WiFi 6 is 9.6 Gbps (1.2 GB/s), while WiFi 5 has a theoretical maximum of 6.9 Gbps, which is an increase of more than 40%.

Secondly, the core technology of WiFi 6 is the introduction of MU-MIMO (multi-user-multiple input multiple output), so that one base station can serve multiple mobile terminals at the same time, which means that when a large number of devices are connected to the network, the problem of network congestion Can be relieved.

The second core technology is OFDMA (Spatial Multiplexing), which can send and receive data to multiple devices at once. In the past, FDMA was transmitted to multiple devices in sequence, and each transmission occupies all frequency bands, which means that the devices in the rear have to wait until WiFi 5 is like this, which is extremely wasteful of resources. OFDMA continues to subdivide the frequency band, allowing different devices to transmit data at the same time, no longer waiting in line, and making full use of resources.

What is WiFi 6E? WiFi 6 vs WiFi 6E?

Let’s talk about WiFi 6E. The biggest change is the addition of the 6GHz band, which is backward compatible and can work in three bands of 2.4GHz, 5GHz, and 6GHz.

The previous generations only supported the 5GHz band.

Generation WiFi 4 WiFi 5 WiFi 6 WiFi 6E
Protocol 802.11n 802.11ac 802.11ax 802.11ax
Released Date 2009 2013 2018 2020
Frequency band 2.4GHz, 5GHz 5GHz 2.4GHz, 5GHz 4GHz, 5GHz, and 6GHz

WiFi 6E provides these benefits:

Increased network efficiency and capacity

This 6GHz frequency band range is 5925-7125MHz, including 7 160MHz channels, 14 80MHz channels, 29 40MHz channels, and 60 20MHz channels. The capacity is larger and the throughput is greatly improved.

New rate breakthrough

According to Qualcomm, the maximum theoretical speed of the WiFi 6E mobile phone chip is 3.6Gbps, and the maximum theoretical speed of the router chip ranges from 5.4Gbps to 10.8Gbps, which is greatly improved compared to WiFi 6.

Lower latency

The new solution also has ultra-low latency of less than 3 milliseconds. Compared with the previous generation, the latency in dense environments is reduced by more than 8 times, and there is a lot of room for use in mobile games and wireless VR.

Summary

Mobile communication technology has come to 5G, and wireless communication technology is also advancing, bringing the benefit of a more complete high-speed experience. Because even today, WiFi still plays an important role in our Internet experience. With the advent of the 5G era, its high tariffs and high traffic consumption will still cause many people to worry about, and experience a better price and more friendly wireless technology. It became another good choice for us.
